The prime objective of the Masterclass is to discuss the benefit of Theranostics in Prostate Cancer, focussing on where it may or may not be of value.
SASNM is dedicated to improving the quality of Prostate Cancer management in South Africa through education and training, and this Masterclass will be an important component in achieving our objective.
Please join us for debate and dialogue, as well as continuing medical education points. The South African Medical Association (SAMA) has accredited SASNM Masterclass for 14 Clinical Points (Level 1).
With three weeks to go until SASNM Masterclass, we’re highlighting two panellists a week to whet your appetite.
Professor Mike Sathekge is Head of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Pretoria. He is President of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (the national specialist examining body for all disciplines), and Chairman of the Medical Research Council of South Africa. Internationally he is on the Governing Body of the World Association of Radiopharmaceuticals and Molecular Therapy (WARMTH), the Immediate-past President of the International Society of Radiolabeled Blood Elements (ISORBE), and past Secretary General of the World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology (WFNMB).
Professor Sathekge and his team have performed several first-in-human studies and introduced peptide receptor radionuclide therapy and PSMA radioligand therapy in Africa, as well as 225Ac-PSMA for prostate cancer. He is a recipient of several key awards for research and service, including being rated as an Internationally Acclaimed researcher by the National Research Foundation and winning the bid to host the Main Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure (NuMeRI) Facility in South Africa. His publication and presentation record in South Africa and abroad has earned him editorial roles on peer-reviewed journals and election as a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). He was honoured to be admitted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore and to win the South African Clinician Society Research Excellence Award. Professor Sathekge is the incoming Editor of Seminars of Nuclear Medicine.
Associate Professor Vikas Prasad is a nuclear medicine physician with 15 years of experience in the field of theranostics with radiolabelled probes, especially for prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumours. Before joining Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin in February 2011, he worked with Professor Richard P Baum at the Zentralkliniik Bad Berka in Germany. In January 2018 he joined the Universitätsklinikum Ulm in Germany as Deputy Director, Department of Nuclear Medicine. He is also Visiting Associate Professor in the Division of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
He has written more than 80 peer-reviewed articles, eight book chapters, and more than 100 abstracts. He has given more than 50 invited lectures and has organised symposia and workshops primarily on theranostic applications of radionuclides.
His primary research interests are in PET/CT, PET/MRI, new radiotracers, the combination of in-vitro and in-vivo molecular imaging, the development of new image processing software, and the implementation of surrogate markers and genetic information in theranostics.
